Strathcona Transmission Main Twinning Project Overview

GS Construction successfully and safely completed the Strathcona Transmission Main Twinning project, a major water transmission main installation in Edmonton, along 92 Avenue between 50 Street and 34 Street on behalf of EPCOR Water Services. Construction began in July and was completed in October, meeting schedule requirements while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and public access.

The scope of work included the installation of over 1,000 metres of 750 mm large diameter watermain, enhancing system capacity and reliability within the corridor. Supporting infrastructure included one valve chamber and one air vent chamber to ensure proper operation and maintenance of the new system. Two 750 x 450 hot taps were installed to facilitate system integration, along with two new fire hydrants to improve fire protection and service coverage.

A key technical component of this water transmission upgrade was the successful completion of a trenchless auger bore beneath active rail tracks. This work was carried out without incident, minimizing disruption to rail operations and maintaining the integrity of surrounding infrastructure. The new watermain was seamlessly tied into existing systems, connecting to a 750 mm CCP main on the west end and a 900 mm PVC main on the east end.

Throughout construction, GS Construction maintained one lane of westbound traffic along 92 Avenue and ensured access to local businesses as required. Careful traffic management and coordination minimized impacts to the public while maintaining a safe working environment for both crews and the community.

The project was completed in accordance with EPCOR Water Services’ standards and specifications. The successful delivery of this transmission main installation reflects effective planning, coordination, and execution, resulting in a durable and reliable watermain installation that supports long-term service needs for the City of Edmonton.
