Valley Line West LRT – Sanitary & Storm Realignment
- Location Edmonton, Alberta
- Description
Valley Line West LRT– Project Outline
The Valley Line West LRT is one of the largest transit infrastructure projects currently underway in Edmonton, extending approximately 14 kilometres from the downtown core to Lewis Farms. Delivered by Marigold Infrastructure Partners (MIP) on behalf of the City of Edmonton, the project requires extensive utility relocations to accommodate permanent track, roadway, and drainage infrastructure.
GS Construction has been responsible for all sanitary and storm sewer realignment works in Areas 1 and 2 of the Valley Line West LRT alignment. Area 2 construction commenced in August 2023 and was substantially completed in December 2025, while Area 1 work began in November 2025 and remains ongoing today. This phased delivery spans multiple construction seasons and interfaces directly with major roadway, track, and structure works along the corridor.
Across both areas, GS Construction’s scope includes installation and realignment of sanitary and storm sewer mains, construction of new maintenance holes and catch basins, abandonment and removal of existing utilities, and tie-ins to live systems. Work has been executed within dense urban corridors under active traffic, with sequencing closely coordinated alongside Marigold’s broader civil works and multiple third-party utilities.
The scale, duration, and complexity of this work demonstrate GS Construction’s ability to sustain long-term underground infrastructure delivery on a megaproject, adapting to evolving staging, design updates, and seasonal constraints while maintaining safety, quality, and schedule discipline.
People & Leadership
A defining feature of this project has been the depth and continuity of leadership within GS Construction’s 400 (Drainage) Division. To date, every 400 Division Foreman has had direct involvement in delivering the Valley Line West LRT sanitary and storm realignment works. Foremen have rotated through different phases, areas, and scopes as the project evolved, ensuring consistency in standards while building shared ownership of outcomes across the division.
This collective approach has enabled GS Construction to maintain productivity and quality over multiple years, manage workforce transitions between areas, and retain institutional knowledge across changing site conditions and design stages.
